2019 Vaikobi Auckland King and Queen of the Harbour

The second edition of the 2019 Vaikobi Auckland King & Queen of the Harbour will be brought to you by the Takapuna Boating Club on Saturday 30th November 2019. This event doubles as the ICF Oceania Championships.

New Zealand's premier ocean ski event also features SUP and Waka-Ama categories, and will see the Auckland Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf play host to the best Surfski, SUP and Waka-Ama paddlers this country has to offer, along with some pretty solid international competition.

We have three possible course options between 18-23km all finishing at Takapuna, with the course decided in the week prior to maximise the best downwind conditions.
A  6km short course will also be available, starting and finishing at Takapuna Boating Club.

These courses are designed to provide the best downwind run, as well as allow paddlers to experience the beautiful scenery and clean paddling waters the Auckland Harbour has to offer.

Shakespear Regional Park to Takapuna (20-22km) - Starting at Te Hurihi Bay at the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, paddlers will have a direct line down to Takapuna. In open exposed water, wind against tide should provide an exciting and technical paddle, and see everyone land on the beach with a smile on their face.

Taikata Sailing Club (Te Atatu Peninsula) to Takapuna (21-23km) - If the westerly wind is blowing, this course will give us an awesome 15km run down the Harbour and under the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge. Paddlers will go through the heart of Auckland city, before rounding North Head and onto the home stretch- a 6km slogfest up to the finish at Takapuna Beach. An outgoing tide will give paddlers a helpful push around the course.

Takapuna Rangitoto Loop (18-19km) -Starting at the event base at Takapuna Beach, paddlers will race out towards Rangitoto Lighthouse. A left turn around the lighthouse will see paddlers hug the stunning and untouched coastline of the northern side of Rangitoto Island, before swinging back around for a straight run home.

Short Course (6km) - Starting at the event base at Takapuna Beach, short course paddlers will complete and out and back loop. The turning buoy will be positioned dependent on the wind direction, so at the turn they will join in with the long course paddlers and all finish together.
